Our garage walls have seen so many different things. When we first moved in, it was a place for my husband’s “Do It Yourself” weekend projects. Later we bought our first car, so that became its main purpose. Over the last few months, our garage is our sons’ favorite place to practice drumming.
No matter what you use your garage for, we can agree that there is nothing more irritating than a noisy garage door. If you are coming home late after the night in town, you don’t want all your neighbors to hear you.
All that squeaking is not amusing at all. In this article, I will give you some useful tips and hacks on how to overcome this problem. So let’s just skip to the main part!Continue reading
If you have a partner that snores loudly, and you are a light sleeper like I am, then it can be very hard for you to sleep through a whole night peacefully and without waking up.
In my case, my husband is a very deep sleeper and a committed snorer.
It has been hard to sleep next to him, and I often found myself lying there in the middle of the night, looking at the ceiling, and wondering what did I do to deserve this.
Running to another room was not an option. It would solve the problem for that night, but it is not a long term-solution.Continue reading
Working in an office cubicle can sometimes be challenging. Have you ever noticed in any brokers’ movie the way in which they communicate over the telephone underneath their own working desks?
That’s because sometimes, the only way to possibly reduce some background noise is by isolating yourself beneath your desk.
I have found myself in similar situations dozens of time! I’ve tried this trick, and it worked, for some time.
However, I couldn’t keep hiding below the table whenever I was making a call, or just in a need of silence.
That’s when I started searching for a real, permanent solution. Now, I will try to help you with a few simple solutions that I have tried myself, as well as other possible steps for soundproofing your office cubicle.Continue reading
As soon as the winter season approaches, I cannot wait to snuggle up in bed with my favourite blanket, make myself a nice cup of hot tea and pick up a book or put on my favourite Netflix show. Most of you will likely agree with me that there is nothing better than a warm, cosy house on a freezing winter morning.
I personally prefer to use a fireplace to keep me warm during winter days, but some people do not have the luxury of owning a fireplace, so they use a furnace or an electric heater instead.
As you probably know, furnaces are usually located in a separate room, most likely in the basement, since they do not look particularly presentable with all the pipes and the additional equipment, so most people prefer to hide them away.
However, anyone who owns a furnace will agree that the noise coming from the furnace room can be quite annoying and can become unbearable over time. Despite the fact that the furnace is usually in the basement, the noise it emits still spreads throughout the house.Continue reading

When it comes to noise and its insulation, doors are one of the most vulnerable parts of your room overall.
Firstly, they are thinner than walls, and secondly there is often a lot of space between the walls and floor and the door.
Also, most of the doors are hollow. That means that they are basically acting like resonating box on the guitar. They even increase the outdoor noise coming to your room.
It can be a really annoying problem, which is actually quite easy to deal with.
Therefore, that’s the area that you need protecting the most when it comes to noise. Basically, you can easily soundproof the doors with some household items, but It depends on the state of your doors how much effort will it need investing to successfully overcome the problem.
If you are in the rush to prevent the sudden noise coming from your doors, and you have no time to shop for any soundproofing item, then this article might be helpful since it uses all the household items to improvise the soundproofing barriers.

Let’s face it, a sliding glass door just looks nice. It’s got a sort of elegance to it that appeals to anyone who likes to make their home as lovely as possible.
I know me and my family enjoy ours since it gives us a lovely view of the outside and our porch. Since it’s not always prudent to go outside, the door at least allows for a kind of second-hand enjoyment.
However, let’s not kid ourselves. These doors have a few problems.
Unlike most other doors, they’re much harder to soundproof and they’re definitely going to need it sometimes. After all, even interior doors are much sturdier and thicker than them, which means sound can pass through easily.
This isn’t normally a huge issue, but what if you have one of these problems crop up:
-You suddenly have very noisy neighbors move in and they’re right in the direction of your sliding doors. You’re going to be treated to noise, more noise and then some noise for dessert.
-Construction work starts up and while most of the noise can at least be muffled, the glass doors let it all in. Definitely not an ideal situation, nor one you want to find yourself in.
-You get a spell of bad weather. It happens, all too frequently these days, that bad weather hits us unexpectedly and you can bet on it being loud as well as unpleasant.
While there are many more, let’s not dwell on them. Let’s try, instead, to both hone in on the problem and then solve it.Continue reading
Soundproofing a room can be a challenging job. Whether you are making your own mini-studio, or just blocking out the noise from your teenage kid, making of the soundproof room might take some time.
The biggest problem is when the age gap between your older one and the baby is 14-15 years. As you may know, 14-15 years is where everything starts being interesting.
You need to balance between your teenager’s revolt of listening to the music at high volume, and your baby’s peace.
Since I was in this position not that long ago, my husband and I decided not only to soundproof the nursery room but the room of our older kid as well.
In that way, both of our kids got their peace, whether is that listening to a really loud music or napping.
In this article, you can find some of the methods that I used to soundproof a room for the music, as well as some other methods that I also find useful for the purposes of soundproofing.Continue reading
Shop vacs have always been great to use for your own home. They are portable but much stronger than regular vacuum cleaners.
However strong they may be, they all have one downside; and that is that they are extremely loud.
If you happen to have used it in a somewhat empty space, like your garage or similar, you must have noticed how loud they are. It is just like they are echoing all around.
This just makes vacuuming very unpleasant.
Nevertheless, they are quite handy, so it would be the best if there was a way to somehow reduce the noise they are making.
Well, is there a way?
Of course there is, but you would have to keep in mind that machines as powerful as shop vacs can never be completely soundproofed, but the only thing you can do is reduce the noise they are making.
Before I tell you how to reduce the noise, let’s give a look at why they are this loud in the first place.Continue reading
What better place for band practice than your own garage? Well, there’s one problem with it – the neighbors.
Most of the time, the neighbors will not hear the clear sound but the drums, as their sound is the most problematic one to isolate.
As a part of a teenage band, I jammed a lot. Then, the neighbors started whining almost every single time we started our session. You could hear the doorbell in the middle of our song. No doubt, it was really annoying for both sides – us and them, so we started looking for a solution.
However, as every teenage rock band, we were short with cash, so we needed a cheap and fast solution to our problems. As back then there were no developed networks of articles like this, we started searching for the possible solutions in the books, asking our older ones, and even some architects.
Basically, we tried some mixtures of solutions that you will be familiar with, shortly after you’ve read this story. And some of them worked!Continue reading
