How I cleaned my nicotine-stained porch screen with kitchen supplies
Nicotine stains and smells can build up over time from smoking on your porch, making it less pleasant to spend time there. But don’t worry – with some effort and the right methods, you can get rid of these stains and restore your porch screens using supplies from your kitchen.
No need fancy equipment or machines.
Follow my step-by-step guide to effectively remove nicotine stains and make your porch a fresh and inviting space again.

1. Gather Your Supplies
- Rubber gloves
- Bucket
- Dish soap or mild detergent
- White vinegar
- Baking soda (optional)
- Soft-bristled brush or sponge
- Garden hose or pressure washer (if available)
2. Prepare the Area
Lay down some old towels or a tarp beneath the screen to catch any drips or runoff.
3. Wear Protective Gear
Put on rubber gloves to protect your hands from the cleaning solution.
4. Mix Cleaning Solution
Fill a bucket with warm water. Add a few tablespoons of dish soap or mild detergent.
Optionally, add a cup of white vinegar for its cleaning and deodorizing properties.
5. Apply the Solution
Dip a soft-bristled brush or sponge into the cleaning solution. Gently scrub the stained areas of the porch screen. Focus on areas with heavy nicotine buildup.
6. Let it Sit
Allow the cleaning solution to sit on the screen for a few minutes. This gives it time to penetrate and loosen the nicotine stains.
7. Scrub Again
After letting the solution sit, scrub the screen again with the brush or sponge. This helps to further lift the stains.
8. Rinse Thoroughly
Use a garden hose or pressure washer to thoroughly rinse the porch screen. Start from the top and work your way down to ensure all cleaning solution and loosened stains are washed away.
9. Repeat If Necessary
If some stains persist, you may need to repeat the cleaning process.
10. Optional Baking Soda Paste (for Stubborn Stains)
If there are still stubborn stains, make a paste by mixing baking soda with a small amount of water.
Apply the paste to the stained areas and let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing with a brush or sponge. Rinse thoroughly with water.
11. Dry the Screen
Allow the porch screen to air dry completely before reinstalling it.
12. Dispose of Cleaning Materials Properly
Dispose of any leftover cleaning solution and rinse out the bucket and brush/sponge.
By following these steps, you should be able to effectively clean your porch screen stained with nicotine!
Remember to always test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn’t cause any damage to the screen.
