Neighbor Sprinkles Baking Soda Along Her Door Entry At Night. Why?

I once had a neighbor who had a peculiar habit of sprinkling a box of Arm & Hammer (baking soda) along her door's threshold late at night.

It left quite a mess, and I couldn't fathom the reason behind her actions.

It seemed like an unusual practice, leaving a powdery mess behind.

At the time, I found it puzzling, as she was otherwise a kind and ordinary lady. However, I never mustered the courage to ask her why she did that.

Years later, I learned that there were 4 possible reasons for my neighbor's strange nightly ritual with baking soda:

1. Odor Absorption

Baking soda is known for its ability to absorb odors. By sprinkling it along the door threshold, my neighbor may be trying to neutralize any unpleasant smells that are entering or exiting the house.

2. Insect Repellent

Baking soda can act as a natural insect repellent. It may deter pests like ants, cockroaches, or spiders from crossing into her home.

3. Cleaning

Baking soda is also a mild abrasive and can help to scrub away dirt, grime, and stains. It can act as a cleaning agent to freshen up the area around the door.

4. Superstition

Some people believe in mystical or supernatural properties of baking soda, believing that they have magical powers to ward off negative energy.

It's also said to have the ability to get unwanted guests to leave by stepping onto the baking soda. An alternative to baking soda is salt, which is said to have cleansing properties too.

So... sprinkling baking soda at the doorway might be a bit messy, but it seems to be harmless!

I still don't know why my neighbor did it, though. It could have been to keep bugs away or get rid of smells, but I guess I'll never know for sure!
