What are Acoustic Panels?

Acoustic panels are special kinds of soundproofing foams that are most of the time open-celled. Usually, they are made of polyether, polyester or extruded melamine.

These soundproof foam panels reduce the amplitude of sound waves by increasing the air resistance. This is what makes them great for soundproofing.

Some panels are made of fiberglass. Fiberglass is a great material for soundproofing as well.

This is because the friction between the fibers and air result in the loss of a lot of sound energy.

The most common isolation is a foam insulation which is often used for soundproofing purpose.

Because these acoustic panels are made of soundproofing materials that have a chemical composition, first-time users may notice a chemical odor.

However, you need not worry about the odor. It is not harmful and goes away after some time.

Bass traps are a type of acoustic panels too.

There are a couple of acoustic panels out there, and just like any other thing, there are good, as well as bad ones.

While setting up the room at my friend's house, we got to try a couple of panels before getting the one that suited her best for absorbing sound.

Testing is important and that’s why you should try out a couple of different panels (if possible) to find the ones that will provide the best noise cancelling results for your environment.

Here are some of the best we came by:

If you are looking for absolute sound absorbing properties, then the Acoustic Pro™ Fabric Wrapped Panels is a great option.

Fabric wrapped panels are more effective, durable, safe, and aesthetically pleasing when compared to other types of sound absorption.

Acoustic-Pro

Even though the pricing is premium, it makes up for it in terms of sound absorbing properties. 2" of foam is as effective as the 1" version of Acoustic Pro fabric wrapped panel.

The Acoustic Pro comes in 1" and 2" options which equates to 4" of foam panels - I have not seen anywhere selling 4" thick panels. This just means maximum sound absorbing property.

They also come in different shape, sizes and colors so you'll bound to find one that suits your room or studio. Choose between square, hexagon, triangle, rectangle and even circle panels.

Built to last and beautiful enough for any home or office, these designer quality acoustic panels combine elegance with top-end acoustical performance. Each sound absorbing panel comes with the Rotofast Snap-On Anchor system for the fastest and easiest install.

Our second choice on this list is the Pyramid acoustic foam panel from Foamily.

They are a reputable shop that provides all sorts of foam products for acoustic treatment purposes.

Many companies only produce acoustic foam with wedge pattern because it is easy to manufacture, but the pyramid pattern provides multiple benefits. For instance, they provide more surface area to reflect excessive noise and absorb unwanted echoes.

This extra material also makes the panel thicker, thereby providing more resistance to sound waves, and the dense material makes it an excellent sound absorber.

Having these on my wall made the acoustics in my studio sound way better. Probably one of the best investments I made.

Plus, the pyramid pattern looks cool, in my opinion. I got them for a project and received many compliments.

With these foam panels, you get a unique wedge design on them.

When you install them, they can look really good on your wall, especially if you alternate the vertical and horizontal ones.

You could even try mixing different colors to get a unique pattern.

These acoustic foam wedges are relatively cheap as compared to other acoustic panels in the market.

So, if you are working on a relatively low budget, then these are a great option.

Some acoustic foam panels may distort the quality of sound and are therefore not ideal for recording studios.

These panels, however, do not distort the sound. The wedges on the panels help to trap sound, further reducing echoes.

These panels are quite versatile and you can use them on walls, ceilings, doors, and windows.

You can actually place them anywhere, as long as you need to block out the sound in that area. They are ideal for home studios, home offices, gaming rooms, home entertainment rooms among others.

My friend tried these panels acoustic for a couple of months and they really worked great. It was certainly shocking that they did make a significant difference, seeing as they were quite thin.

What's more, because they are quite thin, you may accidentally rip them when setting them up. This, therefore, calls for more attention. You can also opt for their 3 or 4-inch options instead.

If you decide to go with these panels, then be ready to do some serious cleanups. The wedges trap dust inside them. Cleaning is not much of a hassle though.

You can simply vacuum the panels and have clean wedges in a matter of minutes.

Acoustic foam panels come with a variety of surface designs.

However, the most common patterns are usually pyramid patterns and wedges patterns.

The unique egg crate design on these foam panels is, therefore, a bonus.

Because these panels are extra thick (around 2.5 inches), they are very good at absorbing unwanted sounds. I also love the fact that they are bigger than most foam panels.

At dimensions of 4 feet by 2 feet, you will require fewer panels to soundproof one wall.

For shipping purposes, these foam will come rolled up and compressed. I suggest giving them a couple of days to expand before installing them on your walls.

One great advantage of these panels is the versatility that they allow. Besides sound absorbing, you can use these panels fo
